US Government’s AI Safety Board Draws OpenAI, Microsoft Leaders As Members

In response to the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board via an Executive Order issued last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has joined the body as one of its members.

Mission and Role of the AI Safety Board

The AI Safety Board has a major role of advising the government including Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkason on the ethical use of AI. The Board, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), will be able to discharge its duties properly when the quality of its members is evaluated.

Besides Sam Altman, other top tech leaders including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Google’s Sundar Pichai will also join. The representation in the Board is counterbalanced with leaders from the public sector as well.

With the growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence in several industries, the President Biden Administration is now looking to drive its responsible usage even within its own infrastructural facilities.

With tech leaders that are major competitors in the Board, the question of conflict of interest remains high on the horizon. Responding to this claims, Mayorkason claimed that everyone in the AI Safety Board understands what the mission is, and will be playing strictly advisory role.

Need for AI Safety

AI is invading many industries at the moment, including the digital currency ecosystem. With AI tokens proliferating at a fast pace, so is the safety concerns.

There are instances of fraud circulating the internet regarding Deepfakes. From major crypto related scams to the impersonation of superstars like Taylor Swift, the clamor for AI regulation has grown in recent times.

While the role of the AI Safety Board will be to primarily help the government in detecting frailties in power plants, human diagnostics and others, they may also play a huge role in helping to stem the broader risks associated with the technology’s usage.
