Ripple Labs Advances In Ireland With Trinity College Partnership

Ripple Labs is gaining global recognition after it inked a partnership with Trinity College to promote UBRI initiatives

Blockchain payments firm Ripple Labs has extended its University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI) program to a Dublin-based university. The partnership with Trinity College’s School of Computer Science and Statistics in Ireland aligns with Ripple’s plan to institute blockchain research initiatives worldwide. This development articulates Ireland’s unwavering determination to adopt blockchain and cryptocurrency.

The Research Mission With Trinity College

Part of Ripple’s mission to offer solutions to cryptocurrency issues led to the formation of the UBRI program.

According to Ripple, the program at Trinity College will be at the Adapt Research Ireland Centre. The initiative targets extensive research on innovative technologies that solve current challenges. These challenges range from fintech and blockchain technologies to cybersecurity, as cyber-attacks continue to occur.

Giving a perception of the modalities of the initiative, the project leader, Professor Hitesh Tewari, hinted that researchers would “develop solutions that address real-world challenges.”

To make the initiative a success, Ripple plans to host an XRPL validator that will support decentralized transactions among university researchers.

The initiative focuses on data control and privacy issues. Users will operate without central authority, and as part of this project, a decentralized social media platform will be launched. Users, mainly students and staff, will participate in workshops, seminars, and symposiums that will promote the acceptance of blockchain across the university.

The University is expected to receive a $200,000 fund over two years towards the initiative.

Ripple Labs’ UBRI Antecedents

In 2018, Ripple kickstarted the UBRI initiative and has since instituted more programs across reputable universities globally.

With over 50 universities in 26 countries covered over the last five years, the UBRI initiative has spotlighted digital payments and fintech solutions. It has placed emphasis on inventions in blockchain and cryptocurrency as its key focus.

In 2024, the University of Toronto in Canada sought to advance payment processing technology and incorporated the UBRI program. It also became an XRPL validator. Noteworthy, Ripple committed $50 million in funding to the project from its inception.

In addition to its recent push in Ireland, Ripple has also obtained a license to operate in Dubai, and other pro-crypto countries, where it intends to promote the UBRI program.
