What Happens to Bitcoin When Strategy Owns Controlling Stake?

Michael Saylor’s Strategy Inc. has continued to buy Bitcoin at a fast pace, but does this pose a threat to the top coin if this continues?

Like Bitcoin, the economic laws of supply and demand govern the financial world and determine the price of goods and services. Any entity controlling supply could have monopolistic power over supply and pricing.

This knowledge has sparked concerns among crypto enthusiasts regarding Strategy Inc., the business intelligence firm’s aggressive Bitcoin (BTC) accumulation. Some have wondered whether Strategy’s large holdings could lead to liquidity issues or market manipulation.

Bitcoin Untouchable Despite Strategy’s Growing Dominance

Saifedean Ammous, author of Bitcoin Standard, recently interviewed crypto entrepreneur Anthony Pompliano and explained the possible impact this might have.

Ammous noted that if the Michael Saylor firm acquired 10 million BTC out of the 21 million BTC supply, it would still have no control over Bitcoin’s governance.

HODLers do not control Bitcoin’s protocol, such as the consensus mechanism, node operation, and transaction validation.

The Bitcoin Standard author maintains that Strategy’s acquisition poses no real threat, even if he initiates a hard fork to his holdings.

“If Saylor manages to accumulate 10 million BTC, he is unlikely to say let’s try and hard fork this so we can make another 5 million BTC supply,” he stated.

Notably, such a move would reduce the value of his total holdings.

As of this writing, Strategy’s total Bitcoin holdings stand at 538,200 BTC, valued at approximately $50.18 billion.

As BGECrypto reported, most acquisitions were funded through equity and debt offerings. The firm recently raised $21 billion to finance its investments.

Rising Competition From Other Institutional Players

Meanwhile, other notable entities have adopted the same acquisition strategy in the broader cryptocurrency sector.

As of March 31, 2025, MARA Holdings held 47,531 BTC, while Semler Scientific had over 3,190 BTC. These entities, including the new entrant Metaplanet, will likely compete with Strategy and dilute its influence in the sector.

Although Saylor’s Strategy cannot control Bitcoin’s supply, the Business Intelligence firm could impact the market.

For instance, if Strategy dumps half of its holdings into the crypto market, the move could trigger volatility and severely crash prices. However, Saylor has vowed never to sell but to continue on an acquisition spree.

Market observers believe that Strategy’s acquisition catalyzes institutional adoption and outweighs some sector participants’ fears of centralization.
