The push to get Ethereum more private is ongoing, and Vitalik Buterin has shared another roadmap to help achieve the ultimate functionality boost.

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder, has proposed a roadmap to enhance the Ethereum network’s privacy. This roadmap focuses on improving the accessibility of private transactions and anonymous onchain interactions. It aims to make them more natural for everyday users without needing major changes to the network’s core protocol.

Ethereum to Offer Users More Privacy

Buterin’s roadmap is keen on the privacy of onchain payments, partial anonymization of onchain activity inside applications, the privacy of reads to the chain, and network-level anonymization. Noteworthy, he took this initiative after considering how weak the privacy on Ethereum has become. Based on its design, the network’s privacy is quite weak due to its transparency.

Ordinarily, a transparent privacy system promotes trust and security, but it also predisposes users to risks. Unauthorized entities can easily track users’ activities and entire transactions, especially if their ETH address is known. In this case, users’ balances, app usage, and interactions become public information.

To fix these shortcomings, the Ethereum co-founder is proposing practical, incremental improvements that can be deployed without overhauling the network. He urged wallets like MetaMask or Rabby to integrate tools like Railgun and Privacy Pools. With these additions, Buterin believes users are guaranteed a “shielded balance” and private send options as a default.

Another piece of advice for wallets is to automatically use different addresses for each Decentralized Application (dApp) rather than leveraging a single one for all activities.

Other Plans on the Ethereum Roadmap

Buterin also thinks Ethereum can improve in other areas. He thinks there should be a focus on increasing Ethereum’s throughput to over 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) through Layer 2 (L2) scaling solutions. Buterin is certain that new technologies, like rollups, will help achieve this feat. Once achieved, Ethereum can support larger applications and more users without losing its decentralized nature.

Also, Buterin highlighted the need for hassle-free interaction between ETH and other blockchain networks. He envisioned a future where cross-chain transfers are performed within two seconds, helping users to move assets and data instantly across different chains. Next on Buterin’s agenda is providing a unified user experience.

He has consistently emphasized that cross-chain security must precede the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), affirming that security must be prioritized before adding new features.
